Nobody in their right mind will argue that writing is challenging work. And nobody knows this better than the folks closest to the writer, in this case my wonderful family—aka Rob and Miranda—who witness the struggle, the triumphs and setbacks with unending support. So this quick post is to say “THANK YOU” once again to them; I’m fortunate to have a room of my own, a door to close and disappear into fictional worlds; or into the void where a world is under construction. (Right now that’s Saginaw, Michigan along the river for my character Siman Miller. I knew diddly about the area two weeks ago, much more now thanks to maps, satellite, images and Facebook.)

Meanwhile, I do not take for granted the love of family, honoring the sign on the door, allowing me routinely devolve into the world’s worse wife and mother in order to become a better writer. They actually deliver warm cookies…

Saginaw River facing south

Did you know the river freezes every winter? And that the worlds largest bean elevator is in Saginaw? Photographer Jim Howe took this mesmerizing photo. Thanks to Mike at Pure Saginaw for providing details and the skyline photo.

If you know and love Saginaw, please share some sensory details…
